M53 pastinM53         M 53. Right nephrectomy for tumour.  Macroscopy: 7 cm diameter tumour with a variegated cut surface that is partly gelatinous, haemorrhagic and yellow, with firm pale grey areas.

M63 Multiple partial nephrectomies from left kidney. Previous right nephrectomy for multiple renal tumours. Macroscopy: 49 mm solid tan tumour with central area of scarring.

Both sections A & B are from this specimen. The other partial nephrectomies (five in total) contained tumours with a similar appearance.

A = Right partial nephrectomy for tumour. Two partial nephrectomies received, both containing multiple tumours. This section is from the smaller partial nephrectomy containing a 19 mm tumour and an adjacent 5 mm tumour.

B = Remainder of right kidney subsequently removed ? further tumours (same operation). Macroscopy: multicystic kidney within which there were multiple solid yellow tumours (11 in total).

C = Left partial nephrectomy (solitary kidney). Multiple solid yellow tumours present, the largest 25 mm (this section is from the largest tumour).

F30 Partial nephrectomy. Previous surgery for polycystic ovaries and leiomyomata on back. Macroscopy: 55 mm tumour with a white/cream cut surface.

Case 10

A. M53 Chronic renal failure due to IgA nephropathy. Acquired cystic disease and intraperitoneal bleed necessitating right nephrectomy. Macroscopy: Multicystic kidney, 378g. Many of the cysts are haemorrhagic.

B. M41 Renal transplant. Left native nephrectomy for ?tumour. Macroscopy: Kidney 95mm pole to pole. Multiple cysts. Subcapsular yellow/brown tumour nodule 10 mm diameter in mid zone.
